October has been a landmark month for The Hub Sport! We’re thrilled to partner with Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club, host of the Bury St Edmunds (East) Talent Academy, a licensed England Hockey Talent Academy.

After discussions with Annemarie Vis and Andrew Dahl, we’ve launched ‘The Sporting Trilogy’, a programme supporting players, coaches, and parents. It complements the Talent Academy’s coaching by unlocking full potential through the BIG 3: Strength & Conditioning, Sports Nutrition, and Mental Skills.

Players gain access to expert-designed programmes for speed, power, injury prevention, nutrition, hydration, and mental resilience with Mind Power 4 Success. This one-stop sporting bundle integrates seamlessly into the Academy, helping athletes train smarter, fuel better, and think stronger.

We’re excited to strengthen this partnership and help the Talent Academy (East) community reach new performance heights! A huge thank you to everyone at the TA for welcoming me to one of their sessions, it was an outstanding experience. The players performed at an exceptionally high level as I guided the squad through a warm-up, body mobility, and injury-prevention programme.

Hockey is a valuable sport for young athletes to join because it builds not only physical fitness but also important life skills such as teamwork, discipline, and resilience. As a fast-paced and demanding game, hockey challenges players both mentally and physically, fostering growth that extends far beyond the field.

One of the greatest benefits of hockey is the level of fitness it promotes. Hockey requires balance, coordination, and leg strength; while stickhandling and shooting develop fine motor skills and upper body power. Because the game involves constant motion, it provides an excellent cardiovascular workout that helps build endurance and stamina. Young players also develop agility and reaction time as they learn to move quickly in response to the ball and other players. These physical benefits can translate into improved performance in other sports and overall health throughout life.

Beyond the physical advantages, hockey teaches essential teamwork and communication skills. Success in hockey depends on every player understanding their role and working together toward a shared goal. Young athletes learn to trust their teammates, listen to their coaches, and support one another, qualities that are valuable both on and off the pitch. These lessons in collaboration and accountability help develop leadership and social confidence, preparing players for future team environments in school, work, and community life.

Hockey also installs discipline and perseverance. Practices are demanding, requiring players to master complex skills like moving backward or passing accurately at high speeds. Young athletes quickly learn the importance of consistent effort, focus, and patience as they work to improve. They also learn how to handle setbacks, such as losing a game or missing a goal—by maintaining a positive attitude and continuing to push forward. This resilience is a lifelong asset, teaching them how to face challenges constructively.

Finally, hockey offers a strong sense of community and belonging. Many players form lifelong friendships with teammates and share memorable experiences that foster personal growth and pride. The sport encourages inclusivity, respect, and sportsmanship, emphasizing that success is not only about winning but also about how the game is played.

In sum, hockey provides young athletes with a unique combination of physical fitness, teamwork, discipline, and emotional resilience. It shapes well-rounded individuals who are prepared to succeed both in sports and in life. Joining hockey is not just about learning to play a game, it’s about developing the skills and character that last a lifetime.
